Plaza Sotomayor: vista principal en Valparaíso, Chile, con el monumento y los edificios patrimoniales

Itinerary

Walking route through the square and the port

A simple sequence to walk the square and its surroundings without wasting time on transfers.

The route, step by step

Start at the square, go around the Monumento a los Héroes de Iquique and look at the old Intendencia. Continue towards Muelle Prat to see the port front and then go into the Barrio Puerto.

If the lift is running, go up with the Ascensor El Peral to the Paseo Yugoslavo and finish with a view over the bay.

The route can be done in any order, but starting from the square and finishing at a viewpoint leaves the climb for the end. That way you avoid going down and having to climb back up the same way. The route can be shortened or extended according to the time available, since the points lie close to one another. What matters is keeping an order that avoids crossing the same area twice.

  • Plaza Sotomayor and the central monument
  • Old Intendencia (Armada building)
  • Muelle Prat and port edge
  • Barrio Puerto
  • Ascensor El Peral and Paseo Yugoslavo

Tips for the route

Wear comfortable footwear: the plan and the hills combine irregular pavements and slopes. Check the operation of the lift before counting on it.

During the announced works there may be limited closures or changes to the pedestrian crossings. Check the notices before setting off and adapt the order if needed.

An extra margin of time is useful if the lift is closed or if works force a detour. Carrying water and protecting yourself from the sun or the wind improves a route that unfolds largely outdoors. Finishing at a high point lets you see the bay from another perspective before coming down. If no lift is working, it is worth weighing up whether the climb on foot is worthwhile.
