What it commemorates

The monument remembers the sailors who fell in the naval battles of Iquique and Punta Gruesa, episodes of the War of the Pacific. It was inaugurated in 1886 in the centre of the square.

Chile Travel includes the parenthesis "1879" next to the name of the monument; the Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales dates its erection to 1886. This guide uses 1886 and does not take the tourist parenthesis as the inauguration date.

Beyond its commemorative value, the monument orders the urban space: the square is arranged around its axis and the façades that enclose it dialogue with it. In practice, it is the visual reference point of the whole port front. Stopping to read the ensemble and look at the crypt helps you understand what is commemorated before continuing your walk. The monument thus works as a starting point for interpreting the rest of the square.

The crypt and the ceremonies

Beneath the ensemble there is a commemorative crypt linked to that naval memory. The monument is a usual setting for civic events and institutional ceremonies of the Armada de Chile.

As it is an active ceremonial space, there may be occasional access restrictions during official events.

The presence of the Armada de Chile in the adjoining building reinforces the institutional character of the ensemble. On notable dates of the naval calendar, the area may draw crowds and temporary access restrictions. Outside the ceremonial dates, the area around the monument returns to the everyday use of the square. That lets you approach calmly and study the ensemble without the restrictions of an official event.
