Plaza Sotomayor: vista principal en Valparaíso, Chile, con el monumento y los edificios patrimoniales

Itinerary

A day in Valparaíso starting from the square

With a full day, the square works as a starting point towards the port and the historic hills.

Morning: plan and port

Begin at the square, with the Monumento a los Héroes de Iquique and the old Intendencia. Continue towards Muelle Prat and walk the Barrio Puerto, the historic core of the plan.

If you arrive by train, the Estación Puerto is right by the starting point.

Starting early leaves room for the port, the neighbourhood and the hills without rushing. Distributing the points by zones avoids unnecessary journeys through the day. With a full day you can include a stop for lunch and still cover the plan and the hills. The closeness of the points lets you make progress without long journeys.

Afternoon: hills and viewpoints

Devote the afternoon to the Cerros Alegre and Concepción, within the area recognised as World Heritage. The heritage lifts and the viewpoints offer the best view over the bay.

The route has slopes: take breaks, and confirm in advance whether the lifts are running.

Finishing the day at a viewpoint lets you see the bay in the afternoon light. It is worth timing the descent in daylight, especially along streets and stairways. If time remains, the port edge at dusk offers one last view of the bay before you finish. It is worth not putting off the descent from the hills until nightfall, though.

FAQ

One day allows you to cover the essentials: the square and the port in the morning and the historic hills in the afternoon. The time available always conditions how deep you go.

How do you organise a day in Valparaíso from the square?

Morning on the plan and the port front, afternoon on the Cerros Alegre and Concepción with their viewpoints. Comfortable footwear and breaks help keep up the pace.
