Commuter train and Estación Puerto
The Estación Puerto is in the immediate surroundings of the square, within the Valparaíso–Limache commuter train system, known locally as Metro Valparaíso or Merval. It is one of the most direct arrivals for getting around the plan.
Check the current timetables and service conditions before relying on this mode, especially on public holidays.
The Estación Puerto serves as the urban head of the commuter train that climbs into the interior of the region. When you get off, the monument and the port front are just a few metres away, which simplifies your first contact with the plan. It is worth treating the station as a reference point: from it, the square, the pier and the neighbourhood are all a short distance away. If the service is interrupted, the urban buses of the plan are the immediate alternative.
Urban buses and trolleybus
Various urban buses run through the plan and the axis of the Barrio Puerto. The trolleybus of Valparaíso is part of the city's historic transport landscape and also runs through the area.
Routes and stops can change; confirm the route at the time of travelling.
The trolleybus, because of its age and its route, is also a recognisable feature of transport in the port city. To move between the square and other points of the plan, it is enough to find the stops on the port axis and confirm the direction of travel. Travelling through the plan by public transport lets you watch the urban landscape itself, with the port and the hills as a backdrop. For short journeys, however, walking is often just as quick.
Coming down from the hills
From the Cerros Alegre and Concepción you can use lifts such as the Ascensor El Peral or the Ascensor Concepción and continue on foot through the Barrio Puerto to the square.
The operation of each lift and a step-free route are not guaranteed: check the service status before going up.
Coming down from the hills on foot is possible along several streets and stairways of the Barrio Puerto, but it calls for care because of the gradients and the uneven ground. Alternating the lift and walking, depending on the state of the service, helps you adjust the route. If you come down on foot, it is worth choosing streets with a gentler slope and avoiding stairways when carrying bags or walking with children. In every case, the final stretch leads down to the plan, next to the square.
